Slander/Libel

Slander

Oral or spoken defamation. Slander is the act of harming one person’s reputation by telling one or more other people something that is untrue about that person.

Libel

Libel involves publishing a statement about someone in written form or via broadcast (in the securities industry the publication is on the form U-4 and U-5) that is untrue and would harm the reputation or livelihood of that person.

Libel is considered a civil wrong (tort) and can be the basis of a lawsuit.
